The Physics Department

ffiseg1Welcome to the Physics Department.

There are 2 specialist Physics teachers, in addition to 2 support technicians in the Science faculty. The school has 2 Physics laboratories, and there is IT provision in every room, as well as the use of the faculties’ class-set of laptops. The department strives to ensure that all pupils are given opportunities for traditional practical work, as well as use of modern information technology.

Subject Leader
  • Miss Gwenno Jones

Subject Teacher

  • Mr Aled Rees

Key Stage 3 Science

The Science faculty follows the newly reformed KS3 curriculum, which places an emphasis on the independent learner and developing the pupil’s skills.

Key Stage 4 Physics

The department follows the WJEC syllabus, and on average 82% of the pupils following the course have achieved an A*-C grade during the past 3 years. The course consists of 3 modules:

Module 1 investigates:

  • The social and environmental factors affecting the production of electricity

  • The transfer of energy

  • The properties of waves

  • The use of electro-magnetic waves and their potential harmful effects on people

  • The Solar system and the history of the Universe

Module 2 investigates:

  • Electricity and electrical safety

  • Forces and how scientific theory is applied in the production of cars

  • The use and potential hazards involved with radioactive sources

  • The safe disposal of radioactive waste, and its effects on future generations

Module 3 investigates:

  • Electro-magnetic induction

  • The application of Newton’s laws of motion

  • Atomic structure

  • Nuclear fission and fusion

  • The use of ultra-sonic waves

  • The implications of seismic waves

Key Stage 5 Physics

The department follows the WJEC syllabus, where 96% of the pupils have achieved an A level (grade A-E) during the past 3 years. The course is of a modular nature, and modules consist of:

Module PH 1 investigates:

  • Basic Physics

  • Kinematics

  • Energy concepts

  • Conduction of electricity and resistance in DC circuits

Module PH 2 investigates:

  • Waves and the refraction of light

  • Photons and LASERs

  • Matter, forces and the Universe

  • Using radiation to investigate the stars

Module PH 3 is a practical based examination

Module PH 4 investigates:

  • Vibrations

  • Concepts of momentum

  • Thermal Physics

  • Electrostatic and gravitational fields of force

  • Orbits in the solar system and the wider Universe

Module PH 5 investigates:

  • Capacitance

  • Magnetic force fields

  • Electromagnetic induction

  • Radioactivity and Radioisotopes

  • Nuclear energy

  • Energy in the future / Medical Physics / Properties of materials

Module PH 6 consists of 2 practical based examinations.

Many of the pupils that have studied Physics within the department have continued with their studies in University, in order to gain a good honours degree in Physics.
